Phase 1
Phase 1 is . . . . . . . . . . . . talk about phase 1
Create a video outlining Phase 1
Step 1-0, Baseline Probe
Step 1-0, Baseline Probe, Pet to Leg 2 sec Components: 1) Nail clippers are present on outskirt of the work area 2) When cat enters sitting position and directs to handler, trial begins 3) Handler holds the nail clippers in their right hand, roughly 6 inches from cat’s front paws 4) Handler uses left hand to pet cat’s right shoulder, past the elbow and down to the lower, front right leg 5) In the same motion, handler positions left hand on the cat’s right, front, lower leg, with the handler’s thumb on the front of the lower leg and the four fingers behind the lower leg, hand stays in place for 2 seconds 6) If the cat doesn’t break it’s sit or move to break contact with the handler, marker word is said before hands are removed 7) If marker word is said, treat is delivered 8) If cat breaks sit, trial ends 9) If cat starts to break contact, handler stops moving their hands. If cat repositions their leg/paw back into a workable position in the hand within 5 seconds, the trial may continue, otherwise the trial ends.
Step 1-1, Pet Shoulder
Components:
1) Nail clippers are present on outskirt of the work area
2) When cat enters sitting position and directs to handler, trial begins
3) Handler uses right hand to move clippers within 2 feet of cat’s front paws on the work
surface
4) Handler uses left hand to pet the right shoulder (if cat is facing you it’ll be on your left)
5) If the cat doesn’t break the seated position, marker word is said before hand is removed
6) If marker word is said, treat is delivered
7) If cat breaks sit, reset
Step 1-2, Pet Shoulder to Elbow
Last step, but keep moving your hand from the cat's sholder to their elbow.
Components:
1) Nail clippers are present on outskirt of the work area
2) When cat enters sitting position and directs to handler, trial begins
3) Handler holds the nail clipper in their right hand, roughly 2 feet from cat’s front paws
4) Handler uses left hand to pet right shoulder and continues moving hand down to the cat’s
right elbow
5) If the cat doesn’t break the seated position, marker word is said before hands are removed
6) If marker word is said, a treat is delivered
7) If cat breaks sit, reset
Step 1-3, Pet Shoulder to Leg
Last step, but keep bringing your hand all the way down to the cat's leg
Components:
1) Nail clippers are present on outskirt of the work area
2) When cat enters sitting position and directs to handler, trial begins
3) Handler holds the nail clippers in their right hand, roughly 1.5 feet from cat’s front paws
4) Handler uses left hand to pet cat’s right shoulder, past the elbow and down to the lower,
front right leg
5) In the same motion, handler positions left hand on the cat’s right, front, lower leg, with the
handler’s thumb on the front of the lower leg and the four fingers behind the lower leg
6) If the cat doesn’t break it’s sit or move to break contact with the handler, marker word is
said before hands are removed
7) If marker word is said, treat is delivered
8) If cat breaks sit, reset
9) If cat fully breaks contact, reset
10) If cat starts to break contact, handler stops moving their hands. If cat repositions their
leg/paw back into a workable position in the hand, the trial may continue. If the cat fully
retracts their paw, reset
Note: Breaking contact looks like them removing their paw / leg from the handler’s hand.
Step 1-4, Pet to Leg 1 sec
Last step but hold your hand on the leg for 1 second before marking
Components:
1) Nail clippers are present on outskirt of the work area
2) When cat enters sitting position and directs to handler, trial begins
3) Handler holds the nail clippers in their right hand, roughly 1 foot from cat’s front paws
4) Handler uses left hand to pet cat’s right shoulder, past the elbow and down to the lower,
front right leg
5) In the same motion, handler positions left hand on the cat’s right, front, lower leg, with the
handler’s thumb on the front of the lower leg and the four fingers behind the lower leg,
hand stays in place for 1 second
6) If the cat doesn’t break it’s sit or move to break contact with the handler, marker word is
said before hands are removed 7) If marker word is said, treat is delivered
8) If cat breaks sit, reset
9) If cat fully breaks contact, reset
10) If cat starts to break contact, handler stops moving their hands. If cat repositions their
leg/paw back into a workable position in the hand, the trial may continue. If the cat fully
retracts their paw, reset
Step 1-0, Baseline Probe
Step 1-5, Pet to Leg 2 sec Components: 10) Nail clippers are present on outskirt of the work area 11) When cat enters sitting position and directs to handler, trial begins 12) Handler holds the nail clippers in their right hand, roughly 6 inches from cat’s front paws 13) Handler uses left hand to pet cat’s right shoulder, past the elbow and down to the lower, front right leg 14) In the same motion, handler positions left hand on the cat’s right, front, lower leg, with the handler’s thumb on the front of the lower leg and the four fingers behind the lower leg, hand stays in place for 2 seconds 15) If the cat doesn’t break it’s sit or move to break contact with the handler, marker word is said before hands are removed 16) If marker word is said, treat is delivered 17) If cat breaks sit, reset 18) If cat fully breaks contact, reset 19) If cat starts to break contact, handler stops moving their hands. If cat repositions their leg/paw back into a workable position in the hand, the trial may continue. If the cat fully retracts their paw, reset
